Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon; And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” 13 So the sun stood still, And the moon stopped, Till the people had revenge Upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. 14 And there has been no day like that, before it or after it, that the Lord heeded the voice of a man; for the Lord fought for Israel.
Joshua 10: 12-14
This has got to be one of the coolest portions of scripture. Ever! Now, to fully understand these verses, you have to take a look at the whole chapter. Joshua and his army had been chasing their enemy all day long, and if night fell, they might lose their chance to defeat them. So, what does any sane person do? Why, he asks God to make the sun stand still so they could finish this battle!!! WHAT?????
I mean, who ASKS for something like that? Who asks God to mess with all the “sciency” ramifications of freezing the movement of humungous heavenly bodies? Who asks God to go against all reason and all common sense?? Who asks God to do something He had NEVER done before??
Who asks Him something like that?
Someone who totally believes He CAN!
I love that the bible includes verse 14 in there: “And there has been no day like that, before it or after it, that the Lord heeded the voice of a man; for the Lord fought for Israel.” For about a week, I was struggling to understand what that really meant. Because He sure did hear people’s prayers before and after that time, and answered them. But I think that the verse really means that never before did someone ask Him for such a favor that seems that impossible. I mean, the sun stayed in the sky for an additional 23 hours!!!
I wish I had that kind of CRAZY faith to pray with confidence that kind of prayer! It seems so absurd, to pray for God to disrupt the planets for one person and one army’s wish. But you know, I think God must have been up there, thinking, “Wow. THAT right there is a PRAYER!! You know what? Darn it. I’m gonna give it to him, and to my people! Just for having that kind of faith to ask!”
Some of us tend to think that God doesn’t work that way anymore. But it doesn’t mean He CAN’T! He created every galaxy, every blade of grass, every grain of sand, and decides each story for each one of us!
Maybe he’s just waiting for one of us to come to Him…..with some CRAZY faith!
But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.
“O Sovereign LORD! You have made the heavens and earth by your great power. Nothing is too hard for you!
“Have you commanded the morning since your days began, And caused the dawn to know its place,
