Not to just ANYONE.
Ha! I’ll bet I had some of you wondering what I might be smoking over here! I just did it to lure you in, but it’s true.
There are many promises in God’s word that come with conditions, or are aimed at certain specific groups of people. I think many of us claim these promises for ourselves without ever really checking to see if we’re the ones to whom they apply. And it would be wise if we stopped, examined ourselves, and see if we really qualify for some of them. Let me explain with some examples (For your convenience, I highlighted the “conditional” part.):
“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1
“No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me,” says the Lord. Isaiah 54:17
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, mybeloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. 1Cor. 15:57-58
He gives power to the faint; and to them that have no might He increases strength. But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strengththey shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:29-31
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Phil.4:13
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life: he that comes to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst.”John 6:35
Whatsoever you shall ask in My Name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you shall ask anything in My Name, I will do it. John 14:13, 14
This is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us: and if we know that He hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know, that we have the petitions that we desired of Him. 1 John 5:14, 15
If we can honestly say our heart’s desire is to please Him, even though none of us are righteous (especially not me!), yet we “strive to attain” (quote from Paul), we CAN claim these promises and every other that He makes!
But if not, you’re holding out hope for something you are never going to get. These promises become commonplace when used too loosely, by those who should never be claiming them in the first place.
If you want these promises to belong to you, too, you must first make the decision to give your life to the One who gives you EVERYTHING, and loves you with an everlasting love! Then, all that He has… all of His peace, all of His victory, all of His joy, all of His love, will be yours, too!!
